Bin it!  St Monica’s Youth clean up in Hoxton

This term, the Youth Group from St Monica’s, Hoxton, took up a Live Simply Community Challenge to improve their local environment.  Using the 'Take Out' resources produced by Young Christian Workers, they surveyed their local area through photos, talking to people and creating a huge map of the area, with a view to bringing about change.  The group was inspired to do something about litter in the streets in Hoxton and to improve recycling collection from people’s homes; the young people felt that rubbish on the streets was a health hazard and made the area look ugly and unwelcoming.  So far, the group has drawn designs for bins to make them more attractive so that people are encouraged to bin their litter and they will be writing to local Councillors to challenge them to improve recycling collection facilities.

The group celebrated the end of the summer term by taking their hand-made kites out to the park to see if they would fly!  The group will resume in the autumn on Wednesday evenings in term-time.
